Description
This Sydney sports store catalogue produced by ex-Test batsman Alan Kippax from the 1936-37 Ashes summer is in good condition.
Kippax’ NSW Sports Store — ‘the House of Quality’ — was at 26 Martin Place in Sydney. His co-director was Mr. HS Geldard. The company also employed a golf and tennis professional. Sheffield Shield teammate Hal Hooker was to start a Newcastle branch. Once Kippax and Hooker added 300-plus for the last wicket, batting all Christmas Day 1928, in an interstate match in Melbourne.
The company’s 1936-37 Cricket Price List saw the top-of-the-range Kippax autographed bat retailing at 60 shillings and the William Sykes & Sons/Don Bradman imported Super Test models at 67/6. Buckskin cricket boots with thick leather soles and toe cap were 22/6.
Bats were re-bladed and faced at low cost. The 1936-37 Catalogue even included hints for preparing concrete wickets.
